His target was the White House.

Zacarias Moussaoui pleaded guilty today to conspiracy charges linked to the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks and said his mission included flying a commercial jetliner into the White House.

Acknowledging that he may be sentenced to death, Moussaoui, 36, said, ``I can't expect any leniency from the Americans.'' Still, he said, ``I will fight every inch against the death penalty.''

U.S. District Judge Leonie M. Brinkema, presiding at a hearing in Alexandria, Virginia, outside Washington said Moussaoui was competent to enter the guilty plea. She didn't set a date for the penalty phase of the case.

``I came to the U.S. and trained'' on a 747 airplane simulator ``to eventually use this plane to strike the White House,'' Moussaoui said. He denied that he was assigned any direct role in carrying out the Sept. 11 attacks that killed almost 3,000 people. ``I'm guilty of a broad conspiracy,'' he said.

Moussaoui said that, in becoming a trained pilot, the plan for him was to help free blind sheik Omar Abdel Rahman, the Islamic Group's spiritual leader who was sentenced to life in prison for plotting to blow up several U.S. targets including the United Nations building in New York City.

He said his assignment was to fly a jet into the White House if the U.S. didn't cooperate in freeing Rahman.

May Face Death

More from the "Religion of Peace"

Two 16-year-old girls from New York City were arrested last month and charged with immigration violations after the F.B.I. asserted that they intended to become suicide bombers, according to a government document. A sensible question, certainly, what with three people freshly murdered (a fourth soon would follow) and a madman now running loose on the streets of Atlanta. The gathered reporters and anyone watching on television might have anticipated a reasoned, thoughtful response, perhaps to include a call for the reevaluation of the relevant courthouse policies. Indeed, last September, Gustavo Selva, chairman of parliament's foreign affairs committee, confirmed that two Italian aid workers — who praised their kidnappers as "resisters"— were freed after the government paid at least $1 million in cash to their Iraqi captors.

The ransom of the red reporter

This is a good thing

Maybe now the Democrats will stop taking the black vote for granted. I won't hold my breath though.

Donna Brazile is uneasy. She has noticed something highly threatening to her party, and she's sounding the alarm. In a column for Roll Call newspaper, Brazile, Al Gore's campaign manager, warns her fellow Democrats that Republicans are seeking to make inroads into the African-American vote. "Once they (black voters) start listening to Republicans, some may even like what they hear." Egad.

Brazile notes that in "many key states, including Ohio, Florida and Michigan, the GOP increased its percentage of the black vote by making a modest investment of resources, reaching out consistently to ministers and polarizing the black community with divisive wedge issues such as same-sex marriage."

Leaving aside Brazile's interpretation (who is polarizing, those who push gay marriage or those who push back?), the numbers are certainly intriguing. While Republicans gained a relatively modest 3 percentage points in the overall black vote between 2000 and 2004, going from 8 percent to 11 percent, the party's performance in several large states was more substantial. In Texas, the GOP won 15 percent; in California, 18 percent; and in Ohio, 16 percent.

Fighting dirty for the black vote

Whining

Heteronormative? It's like watching someone go over a cliff in slow motion. I can't imagine voting for any Democrat any time soon.

The common theme here is the Democratic Left's ceaseless, all-consuming, asphyxiating rage against President Bush. The Left is so obsessed with their 190-proof hatred of the president that, with few exceptions, they have abandoned civil discourse and instead engage in scorched-earth politics. While Americans wait in vain for a positive, forward-thinking Democratic agenda, liberals simply hurl invective at Bush and the GOP. That surely feels warm and tingly on the political Left, but it surely will puzzle swing voters and energizing free-marketeers who feel lucky to have such intellectually paralyzed opponents.

Party of Division

BWAHAHAHAHAHA!

Snicker.

I tried to remember my training. 'Sir, no, sir!" I would scream, even as the gravel scraped the paint off my face. He pushed me and prodded me, but he made me the action figure I am today. Just before Water Survival training, he gave me a piece of advice I'll always remember: "Son, when you get right down to it, you have no nerve endings." Then he flushed me down the toilet.

Toy Soldiers

The Vote

It is not easy to vote with the threat of violence hanging over your head. The Iraqi people risk their lives to vote for a new government and self-rule. An ordinary robber does not slash everyone's throat.

As is well known, the Copts in Jersey City and elsewhere have many suspicions about this crime. But when they have voiced these suspicions, they have been frequently denounced as “Islamophobes” – an all-purpose term of abuse used to silence criticism of Islam and of Muslims. And Hudson County Prosecutor Edward DeFazio is dismissive of the idea that the killings were religiously motivated: “Is it possible? Yes. Do we have anything that gives us reason to believe this is what it was, factually? No. Nothing indicates that was the prime motivation for this. That we can clearly say.” The media has widely accepted the idea that it was just a robbery.

Copts and Robbers by Robert Spencer

A grand old wizard

Why do the mainstream media pretend that only Republicans can be racists?

Because of the double standard that the mainstream media has established for matters of race, politics, and racism (i.e. only white Republicans can possibly be racist and black Republicans aren’t really black), most people don’t know – or need to be constantly reminded – that the self-proclaimed historian of the Senate who is again passing negative judgment on a black candidate for federal service was indeed a member of the Ku Klux Klan.

Sen. Byrd was a “Kleagle,” a recruiter who earned $10 for each new member he signed up for the sheet brigade. Having a former Klu Klux Klan member hold up Dr. Rice's nomination does not look good for the Democratic Party.

But after members of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee approved Rice by a 16-2 vote yesterday and the full Senate prepared for a vote today, some vehemently anti-Bush Democrats suddenly served notice they wanted more time.

Republican sources identified the key holdouts as 87-year-old Robert Byrd of West Virginia, along with Ted Kennedy and John Kerry, both of Massachusetts.

Byrd, a former Ku Klux Klan member, has been one of the most vocal critics of Bush. Rice would be the first black woman to serve as secretary of state.

Byrd's spokesman, Tom Gavin, said the delay was "not intended as any slight to Dr. Rice" and said that before voting, the full Senate should "have a chance to read the transcripts" of her confirmation hearing.

But Republicans said the delay, coming after last week's efforts by Democrats led by Sen. Barbara Boxer to challenge Bush's November election, was an effort to damage the president's second-term momentum.

"The Democrats looked foolish and partisan in the way they questioned the president's election and this looks arbitrary and unnecessary," said Sen. John Sununu (R-N.H.).

A spokesman for Senate Democratic Leader Harry Reid of Nevada said Democrats would allow the confirmation today of Mike Johanns as agriculture secretary and Margaret Spellings as education secretary.

Rice on Ice

Tsunami Relief

I am glad that they are scaling back. The situation in Aceh looks like it is a disaster waiting to happen with the US military caught in the middle. Leave it to the UN, that's what that institution is there for.

In a separate incident, an Indonesian soldier in Aceh fired his weapon into the air Thursday, narrowly missing the rotor blades of a U.S. helicopter delivering aid to survivors, witnesses said. Nobody was hurt in the incident.

The soldier apparently was trying to control a crowd of up to 25 refugees in the coastal village of Panga that stormed toward the American helicopter to grab relief supplies.

U.S. Scales Back Tsunami Relief Efforts

Oh well

The British asked for their citizens back and now they have them back. If there is a problem then the British can deal with it. In other words, who cares?

Another of the detainees, Martin Mubanga, was allegedly assigned the job of plotting terror attacks against New York-based Jewish organizations and was apparently planning to fly to the United States when he was arrested in Zambia in 2002, according to documents obtained by NEWSWEEK. (Mubanga has denied the charges and, like the other detainees, alleges he was mistreated in U.S. custody.)

But those concerns were in effect trumped by Bush’s desire to mollify Blair, who has come under increasing domestic pressure to protect the rights of British citizens held at the controversial U.S. detention camp in Cuba. In a trip to Washington last November, and in follow-up teleconference calls that the two leaders regularly have, Blair made “personal pleas” to Bush to repatriate the British detainees, a British government official said today.

Risky Releases?

Ice Skating is Fun! ...it's also good exercise

Adults who want to burn the maximum calories, or just want to gain more confidence on the ice, can join a learn-to-skate program. Many ice rinks -- both indoor and out -- have added adult programs for those who want instruction in the basic skills without the pressure to compete with fast-learning children.

Coaches say the biggest obstacle for adults wanting to pick up the sport is the fear of falling. A lesson helps adults get over that fear, ``and learn to fall correctly,'' Smith said.

Also, since skaters are continually faced with new challenges, Smith said, individuals incorporating skating into their fitness regime are less likely to get bored and quit.

``You can just flow and you don't have to think about it,'' said Conor McLaughlin, 24, of Boston, who skates at Frog Pond in the Boston Common three to four times a week.

McLaughlin started skating four years ago, after quitting a high-stress job. He found being on the ice relaxing. Completely self-taught, McLaughlin said he learns new moves by watching figure skaters on TV.

``It's not conformed motion like being at the gym,'' he said. ``It's like dancing on the ice.''

The New York Times > AP > National > More Adults Turning to Ice Skating

The good thing is that they are not releasing them to roam freely in the U.S.

As long as they are releasing them in Britain and not here it's all good.

All four Britons held by the US in Guantanamo Bay will be returned to the UK within weeks, Foreign Secretary Jack Straw told the Commons on Tuesday.

Guantanamo Britons free in weeks

The Useless UN

This is disgusting. Blacks have been voting for Democratic presidential candidates by similar margins since 1964, when Republican Barry Goldwater opposed the Civil Rights Act.

That was a big issue, then. And never mind that a higher proportion of Republicans than Democrats voted for the bill in Congress -- Goldwater did oppose it. But the Civil Rights Act has long since become uncontroversial, racial discrimination disapproved and integration of schools, workplaces and public accommodations widely accepted. Yet 40 years later, the image of the Republican Party as unsympathetic to equal rights for blacks seems to persist. Black voters seem still focused on a moment in history 40 years ago.

The new status quo

In support of Donald Rumsfeld

I think Rumsfeld is doing a great job. Unlike Spain or Greece, which had historical grievances against Islam, the Dutch were the avatars of the new liberal Europe, without historical baggage. They were eager to unshackle Europe from the Church, from its class and gender constraints, and from any whiff of its racist or colonialist past. True, for a variety of reasons, Amsterdam may be a case study of how wrong Rousseau was about natural man, but for a Muslim immigrant the country was about as hospitable a foreign host as one can imagine. Thus, it was far safer for radical Islamic fascists to damn the West openly from a mosque in Rotterdam than for a moderate Christian to quietly worship in a church in Saudi Arabia, Iran, or Algeria. And yet we learn not just that the Netherlands has fostered a radical sect of Muslims who will kill and bomb, but, far more importantly, that they will do so after years of residency among, and indeed in utter contempt of, their Western hosts.

Victor Davis Hanson on Europe on National Review Online

The Battle for Fallujah

Via Polipundit.

Over the next nine months, Fallujah, traditionally a rebellious city, metastasized into a Taliban-style fundamentalist tyranny, exporting suicide bombers bent on mass murder. The city's warlords, Janabi and Hadid, paid obeisance to the arch terrorist Zarqawi and competed for his favor by assassinations and bombings. We need to pay attention to this in order to ensure that it doesn't happen here.

Does this crisis amount to a “clash of civilizations”? Many people reject that notion as too sweeping or downright misleading. Yet whether or not it applies to, say, the situation in Iraq, or to the war on terror, the phrase has much to recommend it as a description of what is going on inside Europe today. As Yves Charles Zarka, a French philosopher and analyst, has written: “there is taking place in France a central phase of the more general and mutually conflicting encounter between the West and Islam, which only someone completely blind or of radical bad faith, or possibly of disconcerting naiveté, could fail to recognize.” In the opinion of Bassam Tibi, an academic of Syrian origins who lives in Germany, Europeans are facing a stark alternative: “Either Islam gets Europeanized, or Europe gets Islamized.” Going still farther, the eminent historian Bernard Lewis has speculated that the clash may well be over by the end of this century, at which time, if present demographic trends continue, Europe itself will be Muslim.

The Islamization of Europe?

Nice guy or tough guy?

The president has cleared the decks for his second term with surprising speed and even a dash of ruthlessness. The latest polls show that most Indians have no problem with such names, but liberals are still offended on their behalf. They hyperventilate over minutiae and ignore important stories. Why isn't this item all over the news?

The scale of the weapons cache discovered Wednesday by Bravo Company at the suspected Zarqawi charity was the largest found in the city so far - and stashed in such a nondescript collection of buildings that US troops passed by several times without taking a closer look.

With an estimated 1,000 pounds of explosives, it could have caused damage up to six city blocks away, if detonated all at once. "Not all this stuff was being used for Fallujah - a lot was being exported out, and used as IEDs and car bombs in Ramadi and elsewhere," says Colonel Tucker at the downtown site, just 200 yards from the central Hadra Mohamadiya mosque. "This was the central location for planning."

The weapons store was laid out like an office, and worked under the legal name of the "Islamic Association - Fallujah Branch." Offices were full of documents about prosthetic limbs, and emergency medical work.

Inside, too, were photographs of staffers handing out International Committee of the Red Cross food and medical packets. Both came from good families that had to all appearances successfully assimilated into Western society. Both were well educated and upwardly mobile. Both had money and opportunity. Neither suffered unusual discrimination. Both lived in politically correct, meticulously tolerant societies that permitted no intrusion on their private lives. There was no apparent reason, either psychological or sociological, why either should have become a killer. Yet each freely chose — freely chose — to become a terrorist.

Read the whole thing.

Iraq Troops Find 'Hostage Slaughterhouses'

Iraqi troops have found "hostage slaughterhouses" in Fallujah where foreign captives were held and killed, the commander of Iraqi forces in the city said Wednesday.

Read the whole thing.

Election '04 epiphanies

While 44 percent of Hispanics, America's largest and fastest-growing minority, voted for Bush, African-Americans continued to marginalize themselves, again voting nearly unanimously (88 percent) for the Democratic nominee. Kerry, the crème de la crème of chic Paris could not believe that Bush had been returned for four more years.

GN Online: Amir Taheri: Young Bush teaches 'old Europe' a lesson

Blacks should reflect on conservatism

As a young black person, I long for the day when conservative policymakers like Bush will be able to make true inroads in the African-American community. Democrats have long taken the black vote for granted, talking the good talk, yet failing to offer meaningful reform in their communities.

When I talk with other blacks about their view of the GOP, they see a party that harms African-Americans. I see a party of personal responsibility, values and smaller government that acts to make all people self-reliant — a goal of our nation's finest black leaders, too.

Read the whole thing.

Why I Voted for President Bush

It really annoys me when people ask me why, as a black woman, would I vote for George Bush and not for John Kerry and the Democratic Party. Just because I’m black does not mean that the Democratic Party owns my vote. I can study the issues and come up with who I want to vote for based on my own criteria without being obligated to think of the feelings of the Democratic Party or black people as a whole. This is the first time I voted for Republicans. I voted for Al Gore in 2000 and now I wish I could have a do over.

I voted for George Bush this year because I believe that he understands the enemy that we are fighting. I voted a straight Republican ticket because I think the Democratic Party needs to get a clue and rework what they stand for.

John Kerry lost me when he stated that we had to have a global test, go to the UN, talk to Europe (i.e., France and Germany), before taking action to defend ourselves. The UN is totally corrupt (see oil for food program of which France/Germany was a big part). Of course, France and Germany did not want to go to war against Saddam. Going to war stopped their gravy train.

John Kerry would have liked to go the law enforcement way to deal with terrorists. We’ve tried that, it lead to 3000 people being killed. I believe in preemption, if we are fighting them over there we get a break from them attacking us over here. I don’t believe it was just luck that there has not been an attack on American soil in the last three years.

The Democratic Party lost me because of their actions. At the Democratic convention, Michael Moore, a man whose work is quoted by Osama Bin Laden, sits in the same box as Jimmy Carter.

People whined about how Bush is Hitler, the main stream media tried their best to get Kerry elected, George Soros threw his millions away to get Bush out of office, and Moveon.org gave it their best shot. None of these attacks worked because a majority of Americans believe that Bush understands the threat and Kerry didn’t.

Now the whining and recriminations begin and instead of taking a good hard look at how the Democratic Party is losing voters. They are attacking the people who voted for Bush. I’m not a Christian fundamentalist, gay hating hick. However, if it makes the Democrats feel better to attack me then go for it. It won’t make them win elections but it will make them feel good I guess.

I’m switching my party affiliation from Democrat to Republican.

Let Us Savor

Too bad that Bush did not pick up more of the black vote. However, I'm not giving up hope that blacks will not vote themselves into irrelevancy.

George W. Bush is the first president to win more than 50% of the popular vote since 1988. (Bill Clinton failed to twice; Mr. Bush failed to last time and fell short of a plurality by half a million.) The president received more than 59 million votes, breaking Ronald Reagan's old record of 54.5 million. Mr. Bush increased his personal percentages in almost every state in the union. He carried the Catholic vote and won 42% of the Hispanic vote and 24% of the Jewish vote (up from 19% in 2000.)

Peggy Noonan: So Much to Savor

Four More Years!

This is just wonderful. And government agencies are unable to provide Haitians with even the most basic services.

Read the whole thing.

Moron or Democratic Shill..it's so difficult to choose

Instead, Dan Rather runs with what amounts to an unpaid ad for the Kerry-Edwards ticket.

Is he a moron, incapable of learning anything from the forged-memo fiasco?

Or just a Democratic shill?

On reflection, what difference does it make?

Dan Does It Again

It's about time they stopped taking us for granted

BWAHAHAHAHA!

Civil rights activist Jesse Jackson joined the campaign of Sen. Our response to this crisis would be so exquisitely multilateral, meticulously consultative, collegially cooperative and ally-friendly that it would make John Kerry swoon and a million editorialists nod in sage approval.

And so we Americans mustered our outrage at the massacres in Darfur and went to the United Nations. And calls were issued and exhortations were made and platitudes spread like béarnaise. The great hum of diplomacy signaled that the global community was whirring into action.

Meanwhile helicopter gunships were strafing children in Darfur.

We did everything basically right. The president was involved, the secretary of state was bold and clearheaded, the U.N. ambassador was eloquent, and the Congress was united. And, following the strictures of international law, we had the debate that, of course, is going to be the top priority while planes are bombing villages.

Another Triumph for the U.N.

The Anti-War Turn is a Loser for Kerry

In his current incarnation as a dove, Kerry dares not dissent too sharply from the views of the U.N. leader. I would even go so far as to say that most people here don't care who wins elections overseas.
