The problem the administration faces is not entirely a military one: Our armed forces continue to perform heroically and selflessly under nearly impossible conditions of global scrutiny and hypercriticism. There has not been an attack on the U.S. since 9/11 — despite carnage in Madrid and over 1,000 slaughtered in Russia by various Islamic terrorists during the same period.

Rather, the American public is tiring of the Middle East, its hypocrisy and whiny logic — and to such a degree that it sometimes unfortunately doesn't make distinctions for the Iraqi democratic government or other Arab reformers, but rather is slowly coming to believe the entire region is ungracious, hopeless, and not worth another American soldier or dollar.

Zacarias Moussaoui pleaded guilty today to conspiracy charges linked to the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks and said his mission included flying a commercial jetliner into the White House.

Acknowledging that he may be sentenced to death, Moussaoui, 36, said, ``I can't expect any leniency from the Americans.'' Still, he said, ``I will fight every inch against the death penalty.''

U.S. District Judge Leonie M. Brinkema, presiding at a hearing in Alexandria, Virginia, outside Washington said Moussaoui was competent to enter the guilty plea. She didn't set a date for the penalty phase of the case.

``I came to the U.S. and trained'' on a 747 airplane simulator ``to eventually use this plane to strike the White House,'' Moussaoui said. He denied that he was assigned any direct role in carrying out the Sept. 11 attacks that killed almost 3,000 people. ``I'm guilty of a broad conspiracy,'' he said.

Moussaoui said that, in becoming a trained pilot, the plan for him was to help free blind sheik Omar Abdel Rahman, the Islamic Group's spiritual leader who was sentenced to life in prison for plotting to blow up several U.S. targets including the United Nations building in New York City.

He said his assignment was to fly a jet into the White House if the U.S. didn't cooperate in freeing Rahman.

Two 16-year-old girls from New York City were arrested last month and charged with immigration violations after the F.B.I. asserted that they intended to become suicide bombers, according to a government document. A spokesman for one of their families, however, said the accusation was false and said the government had probably misinterpreted a school essay written by one of the girls.

The girls are both in the country illegally, one born in Guinea and the other from Bangladesh, and are being held in a family detention center in Leesport, in southeastern Pennsylvania, according to the document, provided by a federal agent. It's great that Italy is willing to send 3000 troops to Iraq. However, if they are going to be paying ransom money to terrorists, maybe it's time for them to withdraw their troops or for us to tell them thanks for the help but we can manage without you from now on. Donna Brazile is uneasy. She has noticed something highly threatening to her party, and she's sounding the alarm. In a column for Roll Call newspaper, Brazile, Al Gore's campaign manager, warns her fellow Democrats that Republicans are seeking to make inroads into the African-American vote. "Once they (black voters) start listening to Republicans, some may even like what they hear." Egad.

Brazile notes that in "many key states, including Ohio, Florida and Michigan, the GOP increased its percentage of the black vote by making a modest investment of resources, reaching out consistently to ministers and polarizing the black community with divisive wedge issues such as same-sex marriage."

Leaving aside Brazile's interpretation (who is polarizing, those who push gay marriage or those who push back?), the numbers are certainly intriguing. While Republicans gained a relatively modest 3 percentage points in the overall black vote between 2000 and 2004, going from 8 percent to 11 percent, the party's performance in several large states was more substantial. In Texas, the GOP won 15 percent; in California, 18 percent; and in Ohio, 16 percent.

Blacks need to wake up and stop voting for Democrats reflectively. We need to think about which party can do the best for us. Having a former Klu Klux Klan member hold up Dr. Rice's nomination does not look good for the Democratic Party.

But after members of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee approved Rice by a 16-2 vote yesterday and the full Senate prepared for a vote today, some vehemently anti-Bush Democrats suddenly served notice they wanted more time.

Republican sources identified the key holdouts as 87-year-old Robert Byrd of West Virginia, along with Ted Kennedy and John Kerry, both of Massachusetts.

Byrd, a former Ku Klux Klan member, has been one of the most vocal critics of Bush. Rice would be the first black woman to serve as secretary of state.

Byrd's spokesman, Tom Gavin, said the delay was "not intended as any slight to Dr. Rice" and said that before voting, the full Senate should "have a chance to read the transcripts" of her confirmation hearing.

But Republicans said the delay, coming after last week's efforts by Democrats led by Sen. Barbara Boxer to challenge Bush's November election, was an effort to damage the president's second-term momentum.

"The Democrats looked foolish and partisan in the way they questioned the president's election and this looks arbitrary and unnecessary," said Sen. John Sununu (R-N.H.).

A spokesman for Senate Democratic Leader Harry Reid of Nevada said Democrats would allow the confirmation today of Mike Johanns as agriculture secretary and Margaret Spellings as education secretary.

In a separate incident, an Indonesian soldier in Aceh fired his weapon into the air Thursday, narrowly missing the rotor blades of a U.S. helicopter delivering aid to survivors, witnesses said. Nobody was hurt in the incident.

The soldier apparently was trying to control a crowd of up to 25 refugees in the coastal village of Panga that stormed toward the American helicopter to grab relief supplies.

Take black Americans, the most heavily Democratic constituency -- 88 percent to 11 percent for John Kerry in the 2004 NEP exit poll. Blacks have been voting for Democratic presidential candidates by similar margins since 1964, when Republican Barry Goldwater opposed the Civil Rights Act.

That was a big issue, then. And never mind that a higher proportion of Republicans than Democrats voted for the bill in Congress -- Goldwater did oppose it. But the Civil Rights Act has long since become uncontroversial, racial discrimination disapproved and integration of schools, workplaces and public accommodations widely accepted. Yet 40 years later, the image of the Republican Party as unsympathetic to equal rights for blacks seems to persist. Black voters seem still focused on a moment in history 40 years ago.

The scale of the weapons cache discovered Wednesday by Bravo Company at the suspected Zarqawi charity was the largest found in the city so far - and stashed in such a nondescript collection of buildings that US troops passed by several times without taking a closer look.

With an estimated 1,000 pounds of explosives, it could have caused damage up to six city blocks away, if detonated all at once. "Not all this stuff was being used for Fallujah - a lot was being exported out, and used as IEDs and car bombs in Ramadi and elsewhere," says Colonel Tucker at the downtown site, just 200 yards from the central Hadra Mohamadiya mosque. "This was the central location for planning."

The weapons store was laid out like an office, and worked under the legal name of the "Islamic Association - Fallujah Branch." Offices were full of documents about prosthetic limbs, and emergency medical work.

Inside, too, were photographs of staffers handing out International Committee of the Red Cross food and medical packets. Some ICRC equipment still littered the rooms, along with orders for more crutches and wheelchairs.

Why I Voted for President Bush

It really annoys me when people ask me why, as a black woman, would I vote for George Bush and not for John Kerry and the Democratic Party. Just because I’m black does not mean that the Democratic Party owns my vote. I can study the issues and come up with who I want to vote for based on my own criteria without being obligated to think of the feelings of the Democratic Party or black people as a whole. This is the first time I voted for Republicans. I voted for Al Gore in 2000 and now I wish I could have a do over.

I voted for George Bush this year because I believe that he understands the enemy that we are fighting. I voted a straight Republican ticket because I think the Democratic Party needs to get a clue and rework what they stand for.

John Kerry lost me when he stated that we had to have a global test, go to the UN, talk to Europe (i.e., France and Germany), before taking action to defend ourselves. The UN is totally corrupt (see oil for food program of which France/Germany was a big part). Of course, France and Germany did not want to go to war against Saddam. Going to war stopped their gravy train.

John Kerry would have liked to go the law enforcement way to deal with terrorists. We’ve tried that, it lead to 3000 people being killed. I believe in preemption, if we are fighting them over there we get a break from them attacking us over here. I don’t believe it was just luck that there has not been an attack on American soil in the last three years.

The Democratic Party lost me because of their actions. At the Democratic convention, Michael Moore, a man whose work is quoted by Osama Bin Laden, sits in the same box as Jimmy Carter.

People whined about how Bush is Hitler, the main stream media tried their best to get Kerry elected, George Soros threw his millions away to get Bush out of office, and Moveon.org gave it their best shot. None of these attacks worked because a majority of Americans believe that Bush understands the threat and Kerry didn’t.

Now the whining and recriminations begin and instead of taking a good hard look at how the Democratic Party is losing voters. They are attacking the people who voted for Bush. I’m not a Christian fundamentalist, gay hating hick. However, if it makes the Democrats feel better to attack me then go for it. It won’t make them win elections but it will make them feel good I guess.

I’m switching my party affiliation from Democrat to Republican.

Meanwhile helicopter gunships were strafing children in Darfur.

We did everything basically right. The president was involved, the secretary of state was bold and clearheaded, the U.N. ambassador was eloquent, and the Congress was united. And, following the strictures of international law, we had the debate that, of course, is going to be the top priority while planes are bombing villages.
